Understanding what can (and can’t) be legally upgraded is critical to staying compliant and avoiding costly mistakes. Here's a breakdown to help you navigate it.
What Can Be Upgraded in Tasmania
✅ GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass)
Can be upgraded pre- or post-registration
✅ GCM (Gross Combination Mass)
Can be upgraded pre- or post-registration with the right upgrade kit
⚠️ BTC (Braked Towing Capacity):
Can only be upgraded pre-registration
This means the BTC upgrade must be completed before your vehicle is registered by the dealer.
💸 Don’t Get Caught Out – Common Mistake
One of the most common (and expensive) mistakes we see. Purchasing a GVM upgrade without confirming if a GCM increase is available when you need to tow.
🚨 GVM & GCM – Just because you're upgrading your load-carrying capacity doesn't mean your towing capacity will increase too.
Always ensure the upgrade matches your towing and loading needs. Not all kits include both.
